Ian is back!
I’m passionate about working with people experiencing pain - whether it’s new, recurring or chronic.
I offer direct billing for folks with ICBC claims.
I like to plan treatments collaboratively, by getting to know each person’s preferences, goals, and lifestyle before selecting an approach and providing guidance.
Having studied the biology of pain at a graduate level, I enjoy discussing factors that can influence the experience of pain. I’m also skilled in helping people navigate the broader healthcare system to manage specific pain-related conditions.
Areas of Professional Interest
- Chronic pain
- Computer work ergonomics
- Neck-related dizziness, headaches and pain
- Lower back pain and sciatica
- Jaw pain and dysfunction
Massage style
My treatment style generally involves targeting specific areas with comfortably broad pressure using slow gliding techniques. I often include passive stretches for muscles and joints, as well as muscle compressions combined with active movements. I am comfortable applying a range of pressures, from very firm to light, depending on each patient’s needs.
I prefer to give everyone a chance to relax into the treatment quietly but I enjoy answering treatment-related questions and engaging in light conversation if desired.

I am a firm believer that communication, collaboration, and consent are crucial for success in the therapeutic process. I am particularly fond of working slowly, using relaxation massage as the framework upon which I add more targeted therapeutic techniques. I am comfortable providing deep pressure massage, but will always cater to your preferences. I enjoy working with a wide variety of bodies, backgrounds, genders, and neurotypes. If you are a fan of longer massages, I am happy to offer 75, and 90 minute appointments. Please email or call the clinic to book these longer sessions.
My areas of interest include
-
pathologies of the hands or feet
-
tendinopathies, strains, and sprains
-
depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders
-
fibromyalgia and chronic pain
-
stress and headaches
Massage style
While I am happy to provide lighter pressure treatments if desired, the pressure I generally use ranges from medium to deep. You can expect slow broad contact, sustained sinking pressure, prolonged passive stretches, and limb traction. I like to pick up, squeeze, knead and bow large muscle groups. My style has been described as “slow and melty”. I often include both oil and non-oil based techniques. I aim to facilitate a quiet, comfortable space during the massage so that you can be present with your thoughts and sensations.

My approach is often different from one treatment to the next, in response to the needs of each unique body, as well as each person’s preferences. Generally, I take an approach that is exploratory, moving the tissues with jostling and vibrations to pinpoint areas of restriction. I like to use a combination of picking up, lengthy holds, torsions, and fine movements to help the body find the ways it wants to move. While my hands are almost always moving, the net effect on the nervous system is relaxing.
I frequently treat through the sheets, and without or with minimal oil. While I am happy to provide a relaxation-style massage which incorporates Swedish techniques, for the most part I like to approach the body area-by-area, and address complaints in relation to the nearby structures. I like to treat in the medium-firm range of pressure, with adjustments for specific areas and points.
I tend to be quiet during treatments as I focus on tinkering and communicating with the body, but I am also enthusiastic about discussing areas and tissues being addressed, as well as the principles and rationale that underlies my treatment.

I take a collaborative approach to massage therapy, engaging in non-judgemental listening to understand my patients’ unique needs. I enjoy creating an environment of relaxation while working to achieve my patients’ therapeutic goals.
My treatments can be adapted for almost all patients to receive the mental and physical benefits of massage therapy. Drawing on my education in psychology and health sociology, I understand additional stressors which may be contributing to my patients’ clinical concerns. I believe in empowering patients with education and homecare.
Areas of Professional Interest
- Head and neck pain (headaches, whiplash and concussions)
- Injury rehabilitation (not accepting ICBC patients at this time)
- Jaw pain and dysfunction
- Persistent pain
- Stress, anxiety and depression
Massage style
My massage style aims to meet the specific needs of the client at hand while also creating a relaxing experience. I tend to use a variety of techniques in treatment but reliably include longer, deep holds on muscles, techniques without oil to mobilize specific muscles, and broad, flowing massage with oil. I often include very point specific pressure to important, but frequently ignored, small muscles of the body.
My pressure is medium to firm, but can be adjusted to light pressure if requested. After initially establishing a client’s goals and preferences, I tend to talk very little during treatment. My strengths as a therapist are in providing a clinically tailored massage that happens to be relaxing for the nervous system because it is provided in a safe, quiet, and comfortable environment - but in general, relaxation massage is not my forte. I enjoy building ongoing relationships with my clients so I can better tailor my treatments to their preferences over time.

In my practice, I choose to use a gentle approach because I understand what it feels like to have a sensitivity to touch. I focus on creating a calming environment through sound, scent, and touch, ensuring that all your senses are relaxed and well cared for.
Each treatment begins and ends with three intentional breaths, incorporating optional essential oils such as lavender and bergamot.

Massage style
My massage style is often described as “meditative” and “spacious.” The main intention of my approach is to support nervous system regulation, balancing anatomical focus with systemic relaxation. Although I offer medium and light pressure, I have been told that my treatments “feel deep.” A session with me typically combines broad, slow, sustained pressure with refined touch applied to specific areas of focus. I employ non-oil based stretching, lifting and mobilization with oil-based flow to unwind accumulated tensions. I also incorporate gentle, delicate contact with still holds of body areas. Your first session will likely involve more checking-in and questions about your sensory experience in order to establish what feels best for your body. If you find that past massages have been uncomfortable or unenjoyable, I will gladly take things at your pace and explore techniques in order to find what your body best responds to. I believe communication is essential, and prefer feedback in the moment so that I can provide the session you want to have. Beyond the necessary dialogue, my treatment space is often quiet so that you are able to sink further into your experience.

I’m fascinated by the art and science of massage therapy. With a trauma-informed approach, and a special focus on pain and stress management, I enjoy helping people feel at ease in their bodies.
I also facilitate discussions for students and RMTs to learn about current research and best practices in patient care. In 2013, I was awarded first place by the Massage Therapists’ Association of British Columbia for my case study on treating post-traumatic stress disorder.

I tend to offer medium to medium-firm pressure with a meditative flow that encourages deep relaxation. My treatments often begin with compressions over the sheets, followed by oil-free techniques, before transitioning to massage with oil. I’m curious to find out what you enjoy most. You can share with me if there is anything you haven’t enjoyed in your past massages, or any areas you would prefer not to include. I can incorporate scalp massage and longer, gentle holds for your head and neck. Forearms and hands and calves are areas I enjoy treating as well. I often end with compressions of your feet through the sheets.
We discuss the areas we will include, and not include, before your treatment begins so that there are no surprises. Feel free to let me know in the moment if you’d like something to be a little bit different - an adjustment of the heating pad, a pillow, or massage pressure for example. I like to check in at the end of the treatment to hear what you enjoyed most and if there was anything you might try differently next time.
With a focus on nervous system regulation, I aim to provide a quiet, cozy, and comfortable space for you to truly unwind.
